Hydatid Cysts in Lung Treatment Delhi

Decoding Hydatid Cysts

Hydatid cyst: Treatment Option

Hydatid cyst is a parasitic disease caused by infection with the larval stage of a tapeworm known as Echinococcus. This condition is also referred to as echinococcosis. In humans, the liver and lungs are the most commonly affected organs, with the lungs being the second most frequent site of involvement.

Hydatid cysts in the lung develop slowly and may remain silent for a long period before symptoms appear. Because the lungs are soft and elastic, cysts can grow to a large size before being detected. In countries like India, hydatid disease is more commonly seen due to close contact between humans, domestic animals, and livestock.

Early recognition and appropriate treatment are important to prevent complications. Consultation with Dr. Pallavi Purwar helps in accurate diagnosis and timely management of lung hydatid cysts.

Unraveling Echinococcus

Causes and Transmission

Hydatid cyst disease occurs due to the life cycle of the Echinococcus tapeworm. Dogs and other canines are the primary hosts, while sheep, cattle, and goats act as intermediate hosts. The tapeworm lives in the intestine of dogs and releases eggs through their feces, contaminating soil, food, and water.

Humans become accidental hosts when they ingest these eggs through contaminated food, water, or direct contact with infected animals. Once inside the human body, the eggs hatch into larvae, which travel through the bloodstream and lodge in organs such as the liver or lungs, where they slowly form cysts.

The lungs are particularly vulnerable because they act as a filtering organ for circulating larvae. Poor hygiene, close association with animals, and consumption of unwashed food increase the risk of infection.

Diagnosis and Symptoms

Shortness of Breath

Symptoms of lung hydatid cyst depend on the size and location of the cyst. Small cysts may not cause any symptoms and are often detected incidentally during imaging tests. As the cyst grows, patients may experience persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood (hemoptysis).

Severe Chest Pain

Diagnosis of hydatid cyst in the lung is usually confirmed through imaging studies such as chest X-ray and CT scan. These tests help identify the size, number, and position of the cysts. Blood tests (serological tests) may support the diagnosis by detecting antibodies against the parasite.

Imaging Studies

Depending on the location and size of the tumour, it can compress the underlying lung or impede the movement of the chest wall, leading to breathing difficulties.

Wealth of Experience

Treatment of Hydatid Cysts in Lung

Surgery is the main and most effective treatment for hydatid cysts of the lung. The primary goal of surgery is complete removal of the cyst while preventing rupture and spillage of cyst contents, which could cause infection or allergic reactions.During surgery, the cyst is carefully separated from surrounding lung tissue and removed using specialized techniques to minimize complications. The remaining lung tissue is then inspected and preserved as much as possible.

In selected cases, Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) may be performed, especially for smaller or uncomplicated cysts. This minimally invasive approach involves smaller incisions, less postoperative pain, and faster recovery.

After surgery, antiparasitic medications may be prescribed to reduce the risk of recurrence. Regular follow-up and imaging are important to ensure complete recovery.

Management of lung hydatid cysts requires expertise in thoracic surgery. Under the care of an experienced chest surgeon like Dr. Pallavi Purwar, patients can expect safe treatment and optimal outcomes.
